As far as I know, it's mandatory for a Japanese citizen to have Japanese name and surname in any case. And Japan doesn't recognize double-nationality. from the point of view of USA, you can be American-Japanese, and you can officially have both nationalities, but in Japan you'll only have the Japanese nationality (and that's if you made the administrative work for that, and they'll require you to give a Japanese name).
