I watched 3.0 for the first time since like 2014 yesterday I barely remembered anything about it so it was pretty much a new experience. Loved that shit so much. 2.0 was too much like your typical shonen anime with your classic heroic ending for my taste but I guess that was the point considering everyone hates Shinji because of it now so that's cool.

I feel your sentiment OP. For me, Eva was just another great series but End Of Evangelion is what makes it. EoTV wasn’t even that bad, but the way EoE complements it is genius. Most other anime that would try the move of having complementary endings would fail, especially with something as nuanced as Eva, you’d think there’d be contradictions and retcons left and right.
Yes I know that something along the lines of EoE was planned for EoTV, but we ended up with not one but two endings, one experimental and abstract, yet serviceable and the other nonunironically kino.
EoE is a blast, never ever boring to watch.

What ostensibly looks at first to be a "giant robot slugfest" turns out to be about a conspiracy of some super rich and powerful trying to attain "god head" and heaven without taking God into account.
Though the series and EoE have you "looking over your shoulder for God" (Or Rei!), the refs to the Bible, Kaballa, etc. were really thrown in only because Anno and co. wanted the show to be "different" and it looked kool.
Suggest one read the Sadamoto manga. Can be found online at various manga sites. A lot more extensive and fills in a lot of holes. Makes the anime look like an abbreviated version of it.
