I haven't watched Gintama in literal years and it is still one of the contenders for my top 3 favorite anime.
The show is self-aware at the right times, it features arcs in a way that doesn't bother the fuck outa me, characters slowly and naturally progress into newer people, and THERE IS A STORY BUT THEY DONT FUCKING SCREAM EVERY FIVE MINUTES ABOUT IT. The point of the show is that you're watching their lives through an SNL like lense, and you see what happens when they advance the "Story" and when they just gotta do life shit.
Gintama is both a cold-hearted/hard-boiled mfer and also a heart-melting story about finding who you are and who is your true family.
The only things I didn't like was the excessive use of poop jokes (I know but like) and the weird shit they do between arcs. Like that idol thing. That was fuckin weird. Really I can't find myself to hate anything from that show.
Favorite character is the most loaded question ever, and I'm gonna have to go with the shows creator because we all know what's going on under Elizabeth's suit.

Exactly. The balancing between the hilarious sitcom and the tragic and sad moments was why i loved it. No character is perfect and the way that every episode slowly builds up the characters relationships in some really subtle, natural seeming ways is absolutely great. And because of the comedy and happiness, the actual sad parts hit a LOT harder, pic related. Its easy to forget how tragic and sad Gintama really was under all the laughter and fun.

My favorite part of shounen was always the SoL bits so this show was just up my alley. Perfect blend of comedy and action. Favorite arcs would have to be the Toshi, Fanpoll, and King of the Night arcs.
