Filled up most of the holes in my Ghibli watchlist and saw a bunch of movies I hadn't before at once. Now I've come to proclaim the truth on this board.
The Wind Rises > Spirited Away > Porco Rosso > Castle in the Sky > Nausicaa > Princess Mononoke >> Howl's Moving Castle > Ponyo > My Neighbour Totoro >>> The Garbage that is Earthsea
one of the least interesting movies I've ever watched. beautiful, but so dull.
Michael Rodriguez
Never watched nausicaä or ponyo, but everything else on this list seems fairly accurate. I think Laputa and Princess Mononoke are pretty much equal and i dont think I could decide which is better. Whats your reasoning there?
Gabriel Bailey
>no Pom Poko even listed
Why are you sharing your opinion?
Chase Brown
No Whisper of the Heart, no Takahata films. You've missed the best stuff from Ghibli imo
Eli Reyes
I've seen Laputa way more recently than Nausicaa and Princess Mononoke, that might distort things a bit. Maybe a rewatch is in order.
Kayden Perry
Porco > Mononoke > Laputa > Kino Rises > Spirited Away > Ponyo > Totoro > Shitsicaä(manga is infinitely better) > Howl's > Tales from Earthshit
Blake Reed
People tend to just ignore the non-Miyazaki stuff.
People who rank like 20 movies in an order are cringy. Like, it's okay to like both Princess Mononoke or Nausicaa and not claim one is strictly better than the other. I bet you assign ratings on MAL, you absolute fag.
Jordan Cox
Watch My Neighbors the Yamadas. It's the best Takahata and people who think otherwise should kill themselves
Connor Carter
This, you're really missing out OP
Easton Bell
I've rewatched these many times: My Neighbors the Yamadas, Porco Rosso, Ponyo, Whisper of the Heart, and From Up on Poppy Hill.
A lot of times it's for the aesthetic alone. Sound, music, voice actors, character designs, etc. The last three just seem "cozy?"
Julian Sanders
Take two movies. Choose the one you like better. Rinse repeat. Do you lack the brain capacity for this process?
Gabriel Gutierrez
>I bet you assign ratings on MAL, you absolute fag. I do and they are objectively correct.
Cameron Hill
> Do you lack the brain capacity for this process? This doesn't have anything to do with intelligence, try autism for people who compulsively have to sort things in order.
I suppose if someone were to point a gun at you and forced you to choose between movie A and movie B you could perhaps be inclined to choose one, but outside of that there's no point. You could put them in tiers sure, but to assign some hard metric and say this movie is a 8.1/10 while this movie is a 8.2/10 and increasingly more precise ratings as you watch more is nonsensical.
Ryan Bailey
glad to see porco rosso getting some love, for some reason it is always ranked really low or completely left out of peoples ghibli lists
James Sullivan
It’s loved on Zig Forums though. I personally don’t get why.
Lincoln Taylor
Spirited Away was boring and had a weak message compared to the other movie. The movie was "heres a bunch of stuff that happens". The only reason it won an Oscar is because it was a weak year for the category.
Dylan Flores
Sure.
Jacob Perry
Not hard. Just divide and conquer. My two absolute favourite Ghiblis are Ponyo and When Marnie Was There. For the rest I order movies into tiers, then I order the tiers themselves. It's good enough. 1. Fantastical Miyazaki Spirited Away Kiki Arrietty Mononoke Nausicaä Laputa Totoro 2. The final two Kaguya Wind Rises 3. Whisper of the Heart Only Yesterday Poppy Hill [Ocean Waves] 4. Misc Pom Poko Porco Rosso The Cat Returns Earthsea Howl's Yamadas
