Is Subaru from RE:Zero really one of the worst anime protagonists?
Is Subaru from RE:Zero really one of the worst anime protagonists?
I don't care about Emilia and I don't care about Rem. That's not what upset me. What upset me was the total incompetence of the writing. Everything about the plot and the character interactions led the viewer to get emotionally invested in the romantic development with Rem, so when it was all just tossed out the window with no apparent foreshadowing, nothing to explain why, the natural inclination is for the viewer to make the sudden and harsh shift into thinking that Subaru is just insane, which wasn't really the case for earlier episodes. It's a really heinous example of bad writing, and because it was just so unpleasant to watch, I won't be watching any future seasons of this anime, even if they do come out and the idiots gobble them up.
Yes but I'll still watch that garbage
tl;dr, the author betrayed his own writing, but more importantly, the author betrayed the audience.
>Remfags still seething to this day
Isn't it more the director/studio's fault for cutting content/making the first season end on that point?
The point is that the writing is garbage, and anyone who continues to watch it doesn't respect themselves.
I'm not a Remfag, the writing is just atrocious overall. From the girl's point of view, since they don't know about the time loops:
>Rem thinks he's an incredibly strong person who is willing to risk his life to save her
>Emilia thinks he's some weird rando who decided to basically pledge his life to her for no good reason
So from that end, at least Rem/Subaru makes sense. From Subaru's POV:
>Rem is some demon who has killed him and was generally only nice to him after he saved her
>Emilia is a girl he met for like 5 seconds and is now dedicating his life to loving her
Not loving Rem makes sense since Rem/Ram were pretty shitty to him early on, brutally killed him, etc. Loving Emilia makes no sense and is frankly kinda pathetic.
So yeah, it's just shitty writing.
but ram didn't do anything to him
Worst Hero.
Best Isekai protagonist.
In the novels it's more properly rxplained why he loves Emilia so much
Doesn't matter since it show none of that in the anime.
Not at all. Subaru is what keeps Re:Zero from generic wish fullfillment schlock.
>Loving Emilia makes no sense and is frankly kinda pathetic.
Falling in love makes no sense and kinda pathetic in general if you think about it. But it just happens all the time.
Unless the first episode specifically directs viewers to read the novels as a prerequisite to watching, the anime is viewed as a coherent, stand-alone story.
>muh death
Nigga is basically immortal and have a free pass to do anything with his groundhog day power.
Yet he chooses to be a little bitch and keep crying
>one of the worst anime protagonists?
He is among the best because he has a fucking personality and commitments. Every other japanese character is a cardboard cutout nice guy, Subaru has his personal fucking feelings and preferences. Hell he even turned down free pussy twice, this time and when Rem offered to do anything. he didn't blush fall on his ass and have a harem fall on him from the sky, he wants Emilia and he's going for it.
>but he's a whiny bitch
Yeah I guess getting tortured to death a couple times does it to people. That's what makes him a character rather than a mannequin. If you pay attention you'll see he started as a cardboard guy at first and got more bitter with time.
Re:Zero is fantastic and as popular as it is BECAUSE it flips the standards and conventions on their head, almost like Watchmen asked "what if superheroes were actual people?" or Witcher "what if the fantasy world was like a real world" Rezero took an shit videogame isekai world and turned it into a real world with real people who don't trust the protag unconditionally. That's why it works.
>*blocks you are path*
He's the best self-inserter filter.
I bet you watch Boku no Hero Academia.
Yes, easily.
Rem LOVED him. And he threw that in her face. Rem deserves to be loved by the guy she likes, she's literally the most perfect girl in anime, and yet he has the audacity to like someone else. And somehow the author doesn't cave in to popularity and make her the winner of the romance, instead he sends her into a coma? Ugh. I can't believe it.
far from the best, far from the worst. you need to watch more anime.
Subaru has only given a shit about emelia from the very start dumb remfag.
In Fortnite it's properly explained how the Emperor in Star Wars returned from the dead and was behind everything in the Star Wars sequel trilogy. If you don't show it in the way most people will consume the story, it's meaningless.
In the LN he got was killed by Ram.
The problem is he barely grows as a character. By the end of the first season he's still pretty much the same retard as in the beginning. If he'd started taking more responsibility and acting more intelligently from pic related when it seemed his resolve had improved, I would've excused it as just being overwhelmed by the situation early on.
A character that doesn't grow is boring.
Why? Because you don't like it so I must because I'm bad?
I bet you're fat.
>The problem is he barely grows as a character.
He was ""good"" to begin with and only got traumatized along the way. What growth do you expect of him when he was already doing his best at the start?
And then he got murdered for being suspiciously good a couple of times.
On top of that nobody knows what he did for them so theyu keep treating him like shit so ofcourse he's fucking bitter about it.
It's almost like he's cursed by the Witch or somthing.
Except that entire arc was designed to build up his relationship with Rem and show how flimsy his feelings were toward Emilia.
So, I'm right. No, it's not because "I don't like it so therefore you're bad!" or whatever other simple-minded way you have of comprehending difficult concepts. I said that to illustrate just how low your standards are for calling some anime or anime character "the best of all time." BnHA is basically shounen genre junk food, just like how Marvel Comics movies all pretty much tell the same exact story with slightly different details. The only people who could actually appreciate that kind of thing without feeling like their intelligence was being insulted are the people who are actually too dumb to be insulted. You, as an example, in other words.
If he had character growth he'd say "fuck you i'm out" to all of them and go live on his own.
And that wouldn't be a great story, he's pursuing a crazy goal to begin with. The only reasonable move would be to stop.
I don’t think there’s ever been a character who has more successfully filtered plebs than Subaru.
The butthurt Subaru creates makes ReZero even better.
oh my fuck here we go again
>What growth do you expect of him when he was already doing his best at the start?
I would expect him to be a normal person in a shitty situation at first. Go through deaths before accepting and overcoming the situation. The pic I posted didn't have to be then. It could've been later as long as he was growing towards it.
The problem I have with the character is his character arc is
>normal person
>confused about whats going on
>goes a little crazy
>resolves to become a better person
>back to going crazy
>full mind break
>acts like a retard again
>gets better
>acts like a retard AGAIN
>full mind break again
It's not so much a character arc as a sine wave. Compare that to something like All You Need Is Kill
>BnHA is basically shounen genre junk food
So you assumed that I watched it because I disagree with you and I must like bad things because i'm'm bad, that's your entire post. You start from there and proceed writing another posts talking about isulting intelligence and shit.
That's very intelligent of you, writing long shit because you made an assumption on my character based on having an opinion other than yours.
>Everything about the plot and the character interactions led the viewer to get emotionally invested in the romantic development with Rem
Yes, im sure there was such romantic development when Rem splatted Subaru with her morningstar.
She wasn't in the wrong.
Random creepy dude shows up out of nowhere professing his love and devotion to your protegee
Same dude keeps giving off creepy vibes and even the witch smell
Based.
Cringe.
>All You Need Is Kill
A shitty rip off of Muv-Luv Alternative that had the same character fluctuations you posted
Humans regress, robots don't.
So then she shouldn't be too upset she doesn't win the heart of the guy she brutally butchered then, should she?
Sine wave represents something going in circles, like a time loop story or something.
I'm not really against this, Subaru is trying to be cool, then loses his shit, gets his shit together and and tries to be cool again, like he's really against something he can't handle and he is. Trying to develop him one way would break he story because it is a story about a guy who;s trying too hard and make no sense. If he had any sense he'd either fuck off into the sunset or deliver Emilia to the witch on a silver platter because fuck that ungrateful bitch and his other """"friends""", but he's still trying for some reason. That's the fucking story
God so this is the brain level of the average isekaitard
He DOES grow, he just doesn’t magically become a different person overnight. The illusion that he isn’t changing is because at the beginning of the show Subaru was “pretending” to be a lot more competent that he actually is, and was just getting kinda lucky.
