You do gain something personally which is a sense of personal satisfaction which is entirely selfish and has nothing to do with the greater good or benefit of others, although your conscious mind may dress it up as being for the greater good or benefit of your neighbor. But it's actually about you and your selfish sense of accomplishment or self righteousness you acquire when you return the trolly. People like you to return the trolly, therefore you do so, not because it benefits them, but because it makes you feel like you participated and made the moral choice. If people scorned you for returning a trolly for whatever reason, then most people would not return the trolly, they would take the path which is most beneficial to them personally by not returning the trolly, even if in that case it would be more beneficial to your neighbor because it means there aren't trollies all over the carpark etc, people would still not do it, and would still choose to leave their trollies rather than put them away.
