I also suspect they're largely the same people as the "moe otaku". Apparently when planning Robot Carnival it was pretty much a toss-up whether they would theme the shorts around "Robots" or "Schoolgirls".

It's better the way it is now. Cute girls sell and that's what matters for the continuation of the industry. Sure, originality suffers from it but there have been numerous attempts at making original or "stylized" or "unique" shows that have all flopped horribly which pushes creators towards making the stuff that sells instead. That stuff doesn't sell for a reason and it's not because it has some unique aspect to it that isn't "understood" either, it's just flawed in a way that doesn't appeal to the majority or the so-called otaku.

A love interest or female lead is integral to a series' success and this point is undebatable.

Just because an anime has cute girls, it doesn't mean it can't be unique. You can make an unique anime and pander to otaku at the same time
