Just finished the manga for evangelion and holy shit, how did it manage to be so much better than the anime? There's just so much stuff here that isn't in the anime it genuinely blew me away. The characters are deeper and are given more attention, the worldbuilding is elaborated better and the overall plot just makes more sense. How did it manage to BTFO the adaptation with a single fucking word?
Anyway, what are your guys's thoughts on the manga version of Evangelion? Better than the anime? Worse? Discuss.
Personally it's my favorite version of the story. It should be said though that I began reading it when it was still only on something like volume two and it took me a couple more years to even get access to the animu.
Personally I prefer the anime series (+ EoE) which is rare for me. But the manga is great and provides a version of the story that is different enough to be interesting and worthwhile but similar enough to capture most of the show's best qualities. Any fans of the show who think there's no point in reading the manga should really give it a try! The art is great, the characters are a bit different (especially Shinji), and you get an alternative ending that works pretty nicely. It's also a nice length (14 volumes) -- quite lean and efficient, doesn't take too long to get through.

>the art is great I thought the panels were hard to follow at times, especially in the battle scenes. Also, what's the deal with this scene? Why didn't Ritsuko just shoot Gendo before him even noticing she's there if her whole goal was to kill him and then herself? Am I missing something? Those minor nitpicks aside, I agree with what you said about the manga.
It's not like you can capture the essence of the last two episodes in a manga. Going the EoE route was the right decision.

I was joking, i never read the manga but i still plan on to, i don't if i'm going to like it more than the anime since i've seen stuff like Shinji saving Asuka from MP Evas which to me feels like a bad change.

I don't think it was "better" at all. Overall it plays everything much safer and in a more obvious way, then cops out with a reincarnation ending. The manga's original direction feels played out and generic, i've seen the same thing in other manga series.
The TV show and EoE are much more ambitious and daring and that makes them more interesting and more memorable. Certain scenes have a way bigger impact, and it's still the core aspect of what made Eva a phenomenom. Eva wasn't just a story, it was absolutely taking advantage of the audio-visual medium, it's defined by the whole package. The manga was free to avoid the episode of the week format and delve more into characters, taking all the time it needs, but that means it also loses out on ALOT of the style and development that the show had through episodic stories. It's nice to know Kaji's backstory. You can spin Dance Like You Want To Win over a bunch of chapters but the show managed to make it a favourite with the one episode it had too.
I like it as an alternative take on the original TV show but unless you're a brainlet, the TV show is clearly better as a daring piece of expression by the director with a ton of talented staff flexing animation and design expertise.

>the TV show is clearly better as a daring piece of expression by the director with a ton of talented staff flexing animation and design expertise. oh yeah, remember when the staff FLEXED their SUPERIOR adaptation by replacing a 3-4 page scene that's relevant to the overall plot with a single frame that tells us absolutely nothing? i do
this desu to be fair, I have not finished the manga yet. However, there's no parallel to hearing locusts every 2 minutes like in the anime

>how did it manage to be so much better than the anime Because Anno couldn’t self-insert himself into Gendo as much as he did with the anime.
Charles Wood
It does somethings better and somethings worse. He kind of misses a lot of EoE kino moments. Like the viewer not being able to hear Gendo's last words to Gitsuko. Gendo not giving that speel to Shinji before the 3rd impact. Shinji not arriving on time to save Asuka. Ritsuko jobbing Gendo, instead of Yui denying Gendo instrumentality, etc.

>Why didn't Ritsuko just shoot Gendo before him even noticing she's there if her whole goal was to kill him and then herself?
Because even when they're genius scientists, women are hardwired to be retarded attention whores, and getting the last word in doesn't count unless the other person can actually hear you.

what was this shot in the manga?

this sequence, where it's established that the eva units may or may not be the pilots' mothers i don't think this plot point of eva units was even addressed in the adaptation (may be misremembering, watched it a long time ago)
can you tell me when? wanna see if they properly elaborated on this concept

They say that in the anime too, it's just that the manga makes it obvious

that same sequence, the ghostly mother flying towards shinji, was used in ep 16 instead, right before 01 tears out of leliel.

It's also my favorite version of the story. What it lacks in fascinating direction, it makes up for with more substantial character elements and fleshed-out plot threads. The additions they made with Rei and Shinji's relationship, for example, really surprised me with how well they were done. Same goes for Kaworu and Shinji, and the manga also fleshes out some side-characters a lot more, like Kaji -- or it gives Gendo an acceptable redemption. There's a lot added to the manga that I liked.

Agreed, the manga doesn't let you wonder, it makes the whole thing too generic, but is nice as an extra thing once you finish the anime and movies.

When do you prefer the manga? maybe is because evangelion was an anime first? I mainly also prefer the manga, but usually when the manga is the original version of the story and the anime is badly adapted.
