I was shocked when I finally read the manga and found that 3/4 of the anime was non-canon.
It was lame how the universe bent itself to allow Kenshin to not break its no kill rule. Like our boy here being pretty much "I kill the guys who are too dangerous to live but Kenshin won't kill them".

it's aged pretty badly. the fights are pretty fucking stupid and the side characters are all pretty useless.
samurai shounen are just a bad idea period. there isn't much flexibility with samurai fighting style.
this is why it works MUCH better when you do it semi-realistic like in the OVA
