People expected it to be as good as the first half but instead we got stupid asspulls and almost no character development.

Nishigori ruined second half and ruined the selfishness of Hiro and Zero Two by making them make a selfless sacrifice to kill VIRM

They convinced themselves it would be 10/10 the savior of anime before it started airing, and then it turned out to be thoroughly mediocre with the final third dipping into I want my time back territory. If you watch it with no expectations, it's no different from a lot of seasonal shows. And people should have tempered their expectations when it became obvious it was trying to be an angsty teen romance well before it was trying to be a sci fi mystery thriller. But I get the feeling it was a lot of people's first rodeo with that.

it was the first mecha show trigger made since gainax died, so hype levels were through the roof expecting a spiritual successor to gurren lagann

it even started out very strong, and managed to stay legitimately interesting by the midpoint
then shit went off the deep end, and not in the good way like GL

I don't actually mind the ending myself, but there was so much wasted potential it ended up rustling an infinite number of jimmys so user remains forever butthurt
