>During the interview with investigators, at which medical staff were also present, Aoba reiterated statements attributed to him at the time of the arson. “I had a grudge against Kyo Ani,” he told investigators, employing the commonly used nickname for Kyoto Animation and seemingly referring to his failed entry to Kyoto Animation’s periodic novel-writing contest. Aoba also admitted that “I thought that if I sprayed gasoline around the building while setting the fire, I could kill more people, so that’s why I did that.”
Most stomach-churning of all, though, is Aoba’s reaction to learning just how many lives he took. When informed that 36 people died either in the attack or due to injuries sustained in it, and that another 33 survivors suffered serious injuries, Aoba responded with:
>“Oh, is that so?” (“Sou nan desu ka?”).
As the first official interview since the attack, Aoba had been unaware of just how many people had perished. “I thought maybe about two people died” he told the investigators. However, his admission that his goal was to kill as many as possible, as well as his nonchalant reaction to the death toll, are unlikely to earn him any clemency from the Japanese justice system, and there are no doubt many who share Kyoto Animation’s sentiment that Aoba, regardless of any remorse he may or may not eventually express, be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
It means even less than 'Oh, is that so?'. It's a next to meaningless interjection to fill a gap. A kind of temporizing. Maybe the most common phrase in japanese conversation.
Just one tiny level above not saying anything at all. And that's what he considers the lives of those 36 animators are worth.
What kind of answer did they even expect from schizophrenic psychopath? Just give him the rope and be done with it.

Imagine reading this and still thinking he's mentally sound. The poor man needs therapy to help him re-enter society safely and fucking animals are baying for his blood.
He shouldn't be hung. He shouldn't even go to jail.
I know you're baiting but I don't think he should die I think he needs therapy and he needs to some day be able to live by himself again. No goverment in the world should have the right to kill a citizen
Luis Barnes
I bet that if more than KyoAni burned, and more people outside died, or got severely injured he'd probably laugh.
Little surprised he didn't burn the surrounding area for insurance. Give everyone more a reason for him to be sentenced to death or be shot in his hospital bed.

He'll probably laugh in court when his defense rightfully puts a lot of the blame on KyoAni themselves for their fire hazard building.

Normally agree, but 36 people is a fucking lot of people

Hero. Kyoani absolutely deserved it. You can't even say otherwise, you can try and make yourself sound like a redditor. But the truth is only one.
Camden Green
Yeah, it's more like "I see." Enjoy your death sentence, dude.

You're baiting but the death penalty is fucked up and if it is found he's genuinely disconnected from reality and incapable of making informed moral choices he should absolutely not be subject to it, just life in some secure care facility.
Governments can't be trusted with the power to legally kill their citizens and the mentally ill aren't fully culpable for their actions if they're passed a certain point.

So it hurt him how kyoani only choose shitty LNs like chu2koi and VEG instead of his work.

KyoAni's building was up to code in 2018 when inspected. Japan just has shitty fire code if you're rated as a small office building.
Stuff like not having fire extinguishers, all stairwells leading to the same lobby area, the central spiral staircase made of wood, and the rooftop escape door opening inwards rather than outwards should not be legal. I don't hold the studio responsible for them though, they rent the building and stuck to code - the laws need to change.

>HAH! Thats what they get for making something people here like! Im so grown up that i dont watch anime, but i live that they died.
Fuck you, even if they made crap No one deserves to die such horrible deaths, and no animation studio deserve to be wiped from the face of earth.
Gabriel Cox
And killing him brings them back? Theres no evidence that the death penalty has any effect on deterring future crimes either amnestyusa.org/a-clear-scientific-consensus-that-the-death-penalty-does-not-deter/ Your comment is the equivalent of >le sweet summer child I know very well that goverments kill people every day I know very well that large parts of the world are in favor of the death penalty That does not mean I can not argue against it from a point of view that it gives the goverment to much power and is inherently inhumane
Noah Cox
I respect him the tiniest bit more for being honest about his lack of empathy. It'd just be sad to hear him retract and apologize like a little bitch after months of suffering from his burns and facing a death penalty.
