considering he's continuously atoning for it yeah

But he ruined countless lives in cold blood. Wouldn't him not suffering anymore to make up for all that bloodshed defeat the purpose of atonement?

No. He's a murderer and should have been executed.

the one life he ruined that didn't deserve it he spent years trying to atone for

The point of the story is the world is changing and kenshin is one of the few people who managed to adjust to these changes.
From an era of war to an era of peace.
A lot of the villains Kenshin encounters are relics of the war, people who don't know what to do with their lives after the war, or just people who are failing to integrate into the new society.

It's not his place to decide when and how he makes up for it, that would be the job of a judge and jury.

forgot to add
In the war, might makes right.
Kenshin tries to change everything about him from having a light and happy demeanor, to protecting the weak and upholding justice even to the point of making his sword a non-lethal weapon (for the most part).

OVA Kenshin gets fuck by his past and sins. He also doesn't consider himself worthy of redemption.

he's obviously been pardoned since he's allowed to roam free

I hate how Watatsuki pussied out of killing Kaoru for good. Kenshin's path to redemption would have been more kino if it involved bearing the burden of the people he cares about suffering around him, but he learns to accept this and let go of his naive worldview so that he can properly protect people. A perfect contrast to Enishi who couldn't let go of his past.

Or he could be an outlaw. Objectively speaking though, nothing he does can ever truly atone for murdering an innocent. You only have one life to live, and once it ends you're not coming back no matter what someone else does.

after reflection ova, i'd take any ending over that dog shit.

This is also true. While Kenshin does his best in his search for redemption, there's also the fact the damage he created is never going to dissapear.

He was on the winning side.

You mean Tomoe? Yeah, that's his biggest regret, but only because he personally came to care about her. What about the scores of people he'd slain and families he ruined beyond that one person?

Fuck that. Killing Kaoru would've been too cruel after all the shit Kenshin went through, and it makes sense for Enishi's character that he can't bring himself to kill a woman due to being reminded of Tomoe and traumatized by her death. In the words of Watsuki, Kenshin deserved a happy ending after all the shit he went through.

>him not suffering anymore
Just because he got married and had a kid doesn't mean that he's suddenly cured from the PTSD and the regret. The point of any redemption story is that killing yourself or even sacrificing everything and anything to atone won't bring anyone back to life, so you can only live trying to do the right thing while carrying the weight. In trust and betrayal Hiko Seijuro even spells it out.
Just because you don't see it directly doesn't mean that the guy doesn't wake up crying every now and then from nightmares of him killing Tomoe, when he thought Kaoru was dead during the Enishi arc he went full despair and became a complete shell of a person, which goes to show you he needs someone to keep the pieces of him together because of how broken he is. That's a cross he'll carry until he dies.

But that's not true atonement. The people he killed can never be brought back. Most of the lives he destroyed can never be repaired, loved ones taken away, lifestyles obliterated. These are things that will never go away for the people he affected. Why does he get to live a happy life in the end when all those people were made to suffer after him?

But user he said sorry so that makes everything better!

Kenshin already went through all that with Tomoe being killed. And 20 years of not being able to settle down. If they had also killed Kaoru, the fans would have rebelled. Most fans want a happy ending for even the worst characters.

If you want to see an example of every character getting a bad ending, look at Star Wars. Now how many people liked how it turned out?

Atonement is changing and not doing it again, which he did. You literally can't ask for more.

You can though, you can ask for justice.

What justice and how does it help?

But whatever mental pain he is going through can be mitigated by the fact that he now has loved ones to replace the ones he himself lost. The point I'm trying to make is that many of the people he killed were not replaced. Children of parents, parents of children, brothers, sisters, husbands, wives etc. All different kinds of people were made to suffer because of him and their suffering was not mitigated, the holes left in their hearts by him never filled. Yet the hole in his heart was filled once again in the shape of Kaoru and later on their child. Does that sound fair to you? The one who cause untold amounts of pain and anguish gets to have his own pain and anguish diminished at least to some extent.

asking suffering for suffering isn't justice, its vengeance and if those people would rather see the violence continue they were never truly innocent

Justice is fairness, it evens the scales and makes right the wrongs in doing so. The value is intangible, so if the only thing you care about is physical profit then you won't understand its importance. In this man's case, it would be execution.

>Happy Ending
Didn't he slowly die of aids and his kid hated him?

Vengeance and justice are one in the same. An eye for an eye is objective, nobody is above their own deeds.

People are forgetting Saito had a great sense of humour

Kenshin knows that and yet he spent his entire life atoning for it, putting him on a self destructive path that while it allowed him to help people and better their lives, he got nothing in return and caused him to become selfless to a fault and not value his own life.

Two people helped Kenshin realize that that way of thinking was misguided: Kaoru and Hiko Seijuro. The point they made was that while it was good that Kenshin valued other people's lives and fought to protect the weak, it wouldn't bring him happiness and that he needed to learn to value his own life and recognize the importance of the will to live.

You're talking in platitudes. Why is it fair to kill more people? Who does it help? Kenshin clearly does more good than bad, so executing him would be more bad than good.

Someone post the Hiko Seijuro copypasta

Sorry, I mean "present" Kenshin.

>it wouldn't bring him happiness
Well, nor should it. I understand that Kenshin truly regrets the things he did and the guilt he feels is genuine, but it's precisely because of those feelings of remorse that the path he treads should not grant him any happiness. Giving himself loved ones to protect may make him stronger as a fighter and a person, but I think it also contradicts his quest for redemption. To atone is to suffer and make penance for the sins you commit. That penance does not and should not end by finding happiness for yourself.
