My going theory is they downloaded the entire database for kompromat and then did the crypto to cover their tracks. This is a flex at best, but the scale and scope makes the crypto shit seem like a joke.
that's the problem, he won't even be able to cash out that 100k, that address will get blacklisted by every exchange/mixer
a leverage position with just simple anouncement would have been miles better for covering track

You need to hit quick and fast before everyone else and for that you need to make something that work (the actual scam wasn't new, there is a lot of example of this kind on youtube with elon musk for example) and who don't need a very tough infrastructure for multiple reasons.

The first tweets on Elon Musk account were deleted pretty fast. If he had mentioned a stock it would take too long. Notice how the hacker enticed people to send BTC fast by saying it would only last 30 minutes.
