It should have never have been anything more than the two OVAs. Those were charming collections of fun moments that hinted nicely at a big, mysterious, and whimsical fantasy world, which, combined with the lack of worldbuilding, helped in creating a very magical and explorative atmosphere. The characters' archetypical behavior was also much more charming as they didn't need to be fitted into a larger narrative.
Then the TV anime came along and had to stretch out a concept that was neat for 30 minutes into a long, meandering, and pointless adventure. Fuck, it says so much about the TV anime as a whole when they had to stuff another fucking mech into its ending.

This also reminds me of Kamisama no Inai Nichiyoubi, where the first 3 episodes (originally a oneshot) were absolutely fantastic but then once it moved onto serialization content it just couldn't compare (even if it wasn't bad like LWA). There's definitely something to be said about really short, contained stories and experiences.

The first OVA was great. The second OVA was not quite as great. The TV show had some great episodes and some not as great episodes. It's not a perfect series but it had a lot of heart put into it and I could feel that as I watched it.
