What made it so popular?

Yesterday wo Utatte turned out to be really popular too, it's a breath of fresh air, nothing too fancy, flamboyant oir complicated, just a girl and a boy falling in love just because like in real life.

It was really down to earth and grounded, to the point of being boring, but then it hits you with the purest love story in history of sappy love stories when you least expect it.

If that's anything even remotely close to Tsuki ga Kirei, then fucking picked up.

It's not. It's about adults moping about because of unrequited love.

One thing was the likeable characters. No rapist male or abusive tsundere or anything like that.
It was good for other reasons too but plenty of romance have been ruined by hateable characters. Romance is not enjoyable when you hope the characters don't end up together because they are such shitty people.

There is more conflict but it's still a very simple boy meet girl story.

It isn't. Don't bother.
It's relatable to anyone but autistic teens, edgelords and bitter adults. The voice acting also gave it a level of authenticity few anime achieve. Pity it looked like shit. Tsuki ga Kirei with proper animation and visuals wouldn't even have to fight over the genre's top shot. It'd take it by proxy, without any competition in sight.

Except Yesterday is full of drama and unrequited feelings. The nice thing about Tsuki ga Kirei was that none of the drama was about will they/won't they.

It was a bit silly in the first episode when they just randomly decided to shout the name of the sponsor with no context. That may have scared some people away. It only happened that one time though, might've been distracting if they'd made the sponsor shilling too blatant.

God tier romance anime. He asks her out and they date and they awkwardly become more and more comfortable with one another and fall in love.
One of the best instances of writing was when she told him not to come watch her run and he did anyway. Its such a realistic depiction of something that would happen between a couple, and the anime is littered with moments like that.

It feels authentic. It makes you think that "If i hadn't been a stupid bitch in school, maybe that girl would be with me now." It makes you reflect on how simple those problems were. The key to do this is to exactly not fill it with anime trope garbage, no cheap drama, only simple interaction issues and the craving for intimacy, no horny guy, no slut, just people wanting to be close to someone.
