Is he the most misunderstood character of our time?

People who like Kirito just want a power fantasy, not a real character.
Shield Hero is flawed but he seems like a wasted character, at least in the anime.
I dropped it when he let the queen and princess live, there was no real development in between that made that seem like something his character would do.

Not he isn't. Everything he ever says or does is presented as being in the right, none of the other heros can do anything right without him, and the only people who dislike him do so because of their own flaws, not his.
His only real "flaw" is that he gets kind of edgy and pessimistic for a while, and that's presented more as a result of him being a poor persecuted martyr, rather than any inherent character flaws that he's at fault for.

Subaru is fucking shit, Asta's better if you're looking for good protagonists

I think the problem is that a lot of people can't see the difference between a good character and a good human. Same goes for cool characters. They think something along the lines of he is not a good human (and you gotta admit, him doing the whole "I'm your knight thing" is super uncomfortable to watch and doesn't put him in a good light) hence he is a bad character. I disagree with it since a good character is in my opinion not simply one pleasant to watch, but I bet a lot of people think like this.

Yeah, he has flaws but (the anime at least) doesn't present them as something he needs to fix.

How is that a response? Subaru canonically, in the source material, is supposed to develop quite intense feelings for Rem. It's who his character is. He needs to latch onto something, somebody and it was Rem who was the only one who didn't abandon him and instead offered words of encouragement.

It is a good reason to dislike the character. Him not having feelings, even without reading the WN/LN, is inane. It makes all the development Subaru and Rem got in Arc 2, Arc 3 completely pointless. The audience or "waifufags" as user described them picked up on the underlying theme or plotline that Subaru and Rem form some sort of relationship. What they get is nothing happening. Nope. Not a peep from Subaru who is supposed to be a hormonal teenager.

It makes Subaru look heartless. It makes him inhuman like he's some sort of robot that is programed to say "I love Emilia".

I'm currently half-way through arc 4 of the WN, Subaru's a great character. You sometimes need a character that is rarely 'right' to explore ideas in an engaging way.

Hilariously enough comparing all the shit Subaru goes through to Shield Hero's protag makes Shield Hero's protag seem like a gigantic pussy with how he immediatly goes destroy the world mood over like two fucking instances

Shield hero would be more fun if the first 2-3 episodes was the entire season. The story loses all identity after the protagonist isn't a hated underdog. Now all he has is pedophilia.

The confession scene is just misunderstood.
It's not that he doesn't have feelings for her in the anime, he just has stronger feelings for Emilia.
Definitely should have kept those missing Rem scenes later on tho to cement that.

The anime just made it way less obvious for some reason, he says to Crusche that he already has a #1 and #2 in his heart so its not like they cut it out completely

Yep, I read all the way from vol 1 to 9 interlude and now I'm reading summary user's arc 4. Remfag's autisting did encourage me, I have been following his guide too. Only thing that kind of gets me with his guide is that he mentions stopping at vol 7 (right after the killing of the white whale), I enjoyed the Petelgeuse interactions in vol 8/9,it kind of ties it all together to gives me that warm 'completion' feeling. Also I believe he only says that because Rem isn't in vol 8 and 9, Natsuki Rem did make me feel a bit sad.

well his feelings for Rem should be quite apparent. hell other characters were even commenting about it which was supposed to be a clue when she gets delet because they suddenly stop mentioning it or their opinions of Subaru change.
