Why did Dragon Ball suddenly start taking itself more seriously when the goofiness and bold gags were the main reason of its (early) charm?

Define "seriously"
Really it was only the Cell and Piccolo arc that were really serious. Freiza arc had a great blend of action and comedy while Buu arc had a not-so-great blend.

Because Torishima is a cynical capitalist and Toriyama an obedient slave.

Because it was axebait then.

>suddenly start taking itself more seriously
Vegetto fought Buu while turned into a tiny piece of chocolate

>Toriyama even started the trend of turning a light gag manga into a serious fighting manga

It's a good thing Toriyama realized the error of his ways and forced the movie gues to make battle of gods full of gags and the villain be a goofy cat instead of edgy grimdark

Really it was the push to rekindle the goofiness that handicapped the Buu arc, Super, and GT. Not saying they should've been super serious but I felt that they fucked up the narrative cohesion too many times just so one of the characters can tell a gag or have a gag character with no consequence

though the serious villains were so serious they had no personality

Because thats not really true, Dragonball wasnt all that popular until the tournament saga started and only got more popular the more it distanced itself from the goofiness and gags of the first arc.

No one cares about the panty jokes or whatever, they love the training with Master Roshi, the Tenkaichi Budokais and Demon King Piccolo, all shit that was as "serious" as """"Z""""

Fucking retard, Toriyama's previous series was one of the absolute top dogs of the magazine and dragon ball was a hit from day 1.

I thought it was kind of doing only okay in the ratings so Toriyama decided to do a tournament arc since the tournament arc in Dr. Slump had brought a noticeable bump up in ratings so why not see if it would happen again?

dragon ball was originally a failure, it was going to be axed until the tournament arcs brought it back into popularity.

No it wasn't, Torishima said himself it was looking like it would be axed. Toriyama said t

Cell saga wasn't all that serious.
You had him sucking up niggas like a B horror movie. Shit was campy as fuck.

He never ever said DB was anywhere near close to getting axed.
It just wasn't the top dog in the first arc and wasn't all that popular.

Dragon Ball never distanced itself from the goofiness or the gags. Never.

You also had the main villains basically just on a road trip for a while

>emperor pilaf saga is anything like Cell Saga
oooooooooookay

It's still serious in that he's brutally killing people and it's not played for comedy.

actually, yes it did. Toriyama admits that it got more serious as it went along. Obviously it retained some of his style. He also said the Buu arc got sillier because he was ending it and decided to just do what he liked. Toriyama always liked gags and never liked serious stuff or fighting.

And the fun timey wimey ness of Toriyama's former editor being thoroughly unimpressed with the villains and so he's all "okay, the bad guy isn't 19 and 20, it's 17 and 18! Still not impressed? It's Cell! What do you mean he looks silly? What if he transformed by absorbing the other guys?"

Mr. Satan

Kinnikuman did it first.

Well he did like fighting. He was watching several martial arts movies a day when he did Dr. Slump.

Actually there were quite a few gag manga that became serious after Fist of the North Star became a breakout hit for JUMP.

watching is not the same as drawing. This is what he said exactly

>For me personally, the work “Dragon Ball” is nothing but fighting, which to be perfectly frank, isn’t something I like all that much (laughs),

because americans got dbz first so they assumed it was like that all they way.

Yeah, he only made dragonball because he accidentally let his editor know he liked martial arts who then was all "well if you like martial arts so much why don't you make a martial arts manga do it do it do it"

Kinnikuman started in 1979 and started becoming more serious with the first Chojin Olympics arc which was in 1980. Fist of the North Star didn’t start until 83.
