Can someone explain to me the appeal of One Piece? How is it this popular?
I enjoy battle shonen and decided to give it a try but ended up dropping it after 200 chapters. It's boring, extremely drawn-out and repetitive, every arc I read had the same recycled plot. The fights are bad, there's ridiculous amount of plot armor and gag tier asspulls and they involved no strategy at all. And last but not least the art is just... Terrible, probably the worst designs I've ever seen in manga. It's just too childish.
How come so many people enjoy it and say it's literally the best thing ever? I'm not even hard to please but I hated my experience with this series.
Oda is the absolute best at showing emotion. Maybe try posting a page where a character is actually supposed to be showing an emotion instead of passing out.

Cope. Not the OP. many people are just aware of oda's failings

I'm gonna try to ignore things like art since thats objective.
Cons: >picks up a little later (best early on arc starts around chapter 40, doesn't mean the content before sucks) >long length making it harder to catch up fast >two big arcs stretch too long (namely, dressrosa and wci) >shit anime (anime is actually great for upto the halfway point, after that the art drops and pacing goes to hell, the ost/va/etc is great though) >oda takes a 1 week break every 4 chapters (4 weeks) >female designs
Pros >terrific worldbuilding >usually long arcs (most arcs aren't long in a bad way, they thoroughly explore the contents of the villain, islands, etc) >character designs >SBS >takes on big issues like racism >master storytelling and adventure >immense foreshadowing, some of them date back hundreds of chapters >backstories are often complex and well thought out >no overpowered as hell thus leading to bs power ups characters >minor characters appear in their own cover story and are never forgotten, even if they are in no way related to the current plot >characters remain relevant despite being a decade old >etc
I think so. Every day after KnY ended when I search "One Piece" in the catalog, a retarded "criticism" thread is also up. Literally every day. Someone is dedicated to talking about it without being in the actual generals, probably because they want non-OP fans to shitpost along with them.

I would add that oda hates killing characters, even when it would add a lot of weight on some parts of the story.
