What shonen tropes did this subvert?

None of them HxH does not try to be philosophical above all else it's action manga, so don't go expecting some kind of evangelion or whatever, it's also more event-centered than character-centered.
There is also some points why i like HxH compared to things like DBZ but its just personal preference.
>Fights brings consequence
HunterxHunter brings fights that effects not only on physical/pschyological level on the MC but on the entire world around them.
This is exemplified as when Kurapika kills Uvogin, Chorllo starts a mass slaughter in Yorknew City, as such Kurapika is indirectly responsible for all these deaths.
>Focus on larger scale instead of character centered
Most other shonen manga have the events transpire around the main cast, this is not the case for HunterXHunter, the main cast transpires around the events of the world, we can see this as early of the hunter exam when Gon instead of being chosen has to pass a exam like any other person, or in the chimera ant arc where main villian of the arc literally does not care about most of the main cast existence, Gon and Killua are simply there as footsoldiers instead of the main actors, the story focus on the more experienced part of the hunter organization, the old men and the politicians instead of shoehorning some way to make a 12 year old save the day.
>Not just fights
The hunter organization is not composed just of fighters but of treasure hunters and various other endeavors.
This is showcased by the treasure hunting segment in York New that shows a different side to hunters and brings the series a sense of fresh air while using the treasure hunt as means to build on the world, the election arc also show this by indirect conflict and larger focus on political drama that basically no other shonen does.

Most tournaments don't have a clear champion

Several, not that it does it just for the sake of subverting tropes but rather fits into the story perfectly and gives a more realistic feeling to the flow of the story.

The Chimera Ant Arc is very character centered.

For the first time ever, an anime/manga series has a canon gay couple as the main characters.

The only trope that matters
Austin Watson
it subverts the trope of stories setting up a conflict and then paying it off by having most of the arcs have nothing to do with the MCs and then ending with everyone getting bored and leaving
Logan Green
>Exam is actually based on different tests that have a logic and narrative purpose and not a constant shit of fights
>Tournament has only one fight, any other authour would completely show it to mantain zoomers and spics entertained
>They literally drop of Heavens Arena after a couple of fights and fighting Hisoka, didn't give a shit about muh floor masters
>Yorknew is an actual story and not some shit where we are introduced to 10 new characters, gon, killua and leorio learn some based techniques and all go all out against the phantom troupe until they all die or make them into good guys and with kurapika and hisoka probably fighting chrollo, losing, and gon defeating him.
And so on and so forth, once you see hxh the rest of battle shonen are a load of artificial garbage only made to entertain kids with punches, effects, power ups and power of nakama, they are so basic and boring that is not even funny.

This video picked an absolute strawman to argue whether HxH is an example of subversion of tropes. The reason HxH is considered a subversion of tropes/deconstruction of shounen is not because it's dark. What makes it a subversion is that it handles common tropes of the shounen genre in a way that goes completely against how they're typically used.
Gon transforming to fight Pitou is not a moment of triumph, as compared to Goku turning into a Super Saiyan, but rather a moment of exceptional weakness for the character. The tournament being interrupted is not a subversion of the tournament arc trope, but rather the fact that the tournament itself had nothing to do with characters being stronger than one another and was structurally different to any other tournament arc. Major story arc villains are presented as obstacles to be overcome in dramatic battles only for these to almost never occur. These are subversions of the trope of major villains being defeated in climactic battles with the hero. Have we ever seen a One Piece story arc villain being defeated in any way besides a punch from Luffy? This is where 'subversion' comes from

>massive tournament - Gon and Killua aren't even interested and leave
>Gon's "hero" dad is just some deadbeat who everyone hates and Gon doesn't even end up liking
>the MCs' trainer isn't some old man but some cute girl... who ends up being an old lady herself for double subversion
>epic battle between 2 powerhouses (Meruem V Netero) isn't even decided by strength but by a nuke
>most shounen have some asexual, innocent protag... Gon has actually been with older women and is (hinted to be) sexually experienced with them
Ayden Adams
>>Gon's "hero" dad is just some deadbeat who everyone hates and Gon doesn't even end up liking
that's not a subversion though, the MCs dad being a piece of shit is a pretty common trope
Nathan Phillips
The tournament at the end of the Hunter Exam gets completely brushed over with the one of the most qualified contestants being the one who doesn't get the licence due to his brother's control. It's like a triple subversion in one
Luke Perry
an example is gon vs pitou. only to have the consequences immediately reverted and the mc achieve his goal of meeting his dad.
>inb4 written out of the story
no. there were multiple times when the narrative shifted to another character for a length of time. not to mention the manga isnt finished.
Kevin Bennett
Most MCs don't even have a dad as part of the story.
Brandon Diaz
No they're not. Luffy's dad, Ginta's dad, Naruto's dad, and Goku's (grand)dad are all portrayed as these mystical, all-good heroes that can do no wrong.
Gin, on the other hand, is shown repeatedly to be a piece of shit once we meet him.
Cameron Davis
>not to mention the manga isnt finished
exactly, that part of the story isn't even over, alluka is from the dark continent we don't know what the results of that will be
Joseph Davis
Literally none of them. HiatusXHiatus is the epitome of shonen tropes, this is proven by how a lot of shonens get their influence from it.
