I really like Your Name, but Shinkai isn't remotely in the same league as Miyazaki.
Satoshi Kon, Isao Takahata, Naoko Yamada, Mamoru Oshii, and even Mamoru Hosoda are more worthy rivals than Shinkai.

Nausicaa practically put me to sleep. It was like a nasty rough draft of Mononoke. Never understood the praise.

Why no one in this retarded fucking site ever talks about In this corner of the world?

Is Liz and the blue bird worth it?

There is no debate here. One is in the business from 60 years and proved himself by making several masterpiece, the other is a young artist who made some great things and is on top right now, but has still to prove to be amongs the greatest. Comparing them is like comparing CR7 and Mbappe. Next time try to compare Miyazaki and Takahata, or Mamoru Oshii and Satoshi Kon, and stop doing this shitty comparison.

>comparing CR7 and Mbappe
For a second there i thought you were talking about guns

KFC has a better menu but Mcdonalds is more consistent

KFC's boneless wings used to be god tier but they reversed the order of cooking and saucing them when they brought them back and it kills me inside how they made them worse forever.

One is a hack who forced his non-existent writing skill into a story, covering it with pretty visual.
The other one Miyazaki.
Not even a debate.

Miyazaki is a little overrated, but only a little. He's still very good and has had innumerable contributions to the media. Shinkai is essentially Japanese Michael Bay. A third rate hack that makes high budget trashy Hollywood-style films that no one would even remember if they didn't have enormously inflated budgets. Some of his early stuff ranges from mediocre to okay, but Kimi no Na Wa and Tenki no Ko are just bad.
A comparison between the two is flat out insulting.
It's difficult to compare Kon and Miyazaki because they have virtually no overlap in themes, artistic vision, or style of direction. I prefer Kon films myself but I wouldn't risk saying he's objectively better than Miyazaki. That said, he would at least be a better choice for OP than fucking Shitkai. His death was a tragic loss.
>Satoshi Kon
I agree, see above.
>Takahata
His and Miyazaki's styles are so influenced by one another I find them hard to even separate, but no doubt he's at least better than Shinkai.
>Yamada
She's okay at her niche, but it's such a limited niche that I question her ability to direct anything else.
>Oshii
Has like 3-4 amazing works and a lot of really shitty ones. When he's good he's good, but he lacks consistency. I've always gotten the impression that he's the kind of director who's only good when working in very specific conditions and state of mind.
>Hosoda
I loved The Girl Who Leapt Through Time but apart from that, the rest of his films feel like rehashes of the same thing. And while I don't have any particular problem with his furry fetish, he tends to shove it in even when it has zero contribution to the story.

*to the medium

Shinkai>Miyazaki

Mamoru Hosoda is better than both of them.

Shinkai doesn't like being compared to Miyazaki, he says he isn't worthy of such a comparison. Maybe it's just nip politeness speach but I'd not be surprised if he was sincere.
I prefer Miyazaki's movies personally, shinkai stuff is beautiful and has some of the best backgrounds you can find in anime but tends to bore me.

>I loved The Girl Who Leapt Through Time but apart from that, the rest of his films feel like rehashes of the same thing.
Just like miyazaki, except Hosoda reshases good things not just tired anti-humanity Japanese 'environmentalism'. Miyazaki is better as a gundam villain than a real person.

>he tends to shove it in even when it has zero contribution to the story.
Yes, and no. The story would be fine without it, but I think it adds to it just marginally.

>I don't have any particular problem with his furry fetish
I do, but I think it's more of a way to tell a fantastical story easily than an actual fetish.

Because it's shit, left-wing propaganda.

Ghibli films are god tier but Miyazaki comes off as a bit of a dickhead probably due to his films popularity with everyone, That being said Howls Moving Castle is one of my favorite films of all time.

>muh dindu nuffin
you have to go anywhere but here to have a proper discussion without being shitposted to death

For the same reason no one talks about isekai cheat magician. It's terrible with zero merit.

objectively miyazaki
but in miyazaki's mind it's shinkai because he dragged him out of retirement because of some overdone bodyswap movie which wasn't anything special, but it dumpstered everything that miyazaki had ever done in his life

pretty unreal
