That's right, it's time to read Katsuhiro Otomo's biggest hit that was also adapted into the greatest animated movie of all time, AKIRA! Cool teens popping pills on motorcycles, young psychic kids that look like they're 90, the complete collapse of Japanese society, this one's got it all. Let's get started!
I dunno, they were supposedly going to reprint all of his manga too, but there hasn't been any news of that either. Which is too bad, because I really want to get a copy of Domu for under 90 bucks
Same. Possibly my favorite manga of all time, too. It's just so good. There are deep themes and ideas at play, yet it's immediately accessible and readable due to its fast pace and simple characters.
The movie adaption, on the other, is only notable imo because of the fluid animation and technical achievements. If you haven't read the manga you have no idea what's going on. And even if you have read the manga, you probably still don't have any idea what's going on.
Otomo was heavily involved in the production of the movie, tho, so eh. It's more like he...rushed adapting his own work?
Nice one, OP. Most people haven't read it and it's so much better than the movie. Kudos to you in your educational storytime. I read a colored spanish localization so I'll be glad to read it again.
The movie was made while the manga was still ongoing and Otomo even took some ideas from it for the later parts of the manga. I think he was just playing with his idea around and see what could come from it.
