Both were 2 cour. The second cour of season 2 was kind of weak and I think a lot of people dropped it when the newbi squad was going around travelling.

Worst part is I actually kind of liked them but they just took over the story. (The mage being an NPC is a fantastic twist that I don't remember going anywhere).
But I wasn't really on board with the main plot that much either in the second season. I feel Log Horizon's characters too efficiently deal with problems which reduces the threat level.

I mean, there's not much threat in general since they're immortal, but everyone got wrecked a bunch for a solid number of episodes during the first half of the first season before they figured out how to handle the knight guy and that raid boss.
I rewatched it a month or so ago in anticipation of S3, it was just as much fun as ever. And I still don't mind the kids as much as everyone else seems to.

S2 was all about the mounting dangers of both the game being more real and the politics getting more thick. And then there's the ayys.

I didn't mind the second half of season 2, partly because of Roe 2, but I do agree the show drops a bit when the focus is away from Shiroe, same with the Akatsuki part of the first half.
