I prefer 1999 because of the soundtrack and mood, I felt like 2011 tried too hard to appeal to kids with its artstyle and fillers. It's still one of the best anime ever made anyways and a must-watch to me if you're fine with watching longer series than the classic 12/24 eps.

It doesn’t go to shit halfway through like most manga. It also doesn’t have the typical nip flaws that tend to destroy the whole series such as ‘smart’ characters that read the script, forced climaxes and confrontations instead of letting the story flow naturally, power of friendship allowing the MC to just about beat an opponent leagues above him, making the MC look more important than he really is etc etc.

It's probably good but why is the character design so bad?
The art and style is just not appealing at all to me. Very unaesthetic.
I know it takes a back seat to story and what not but how could he have not designed better looking characters?
