I do find it interesting that he specifically saw the younger version of Ataru's mom in the ball, though. I think there are two possible reasons for that.
1)The ball shows your (mis)match in a single fixed state from before you marry them, and doesn't change as you both age
or 2) Ataru's mom has actually become a better fit for her husband as she's gotten older

Just finished it. Lum gets a cold from her dad, and all the guys in class get consumed by indirect kiss autism trying to get a hold of her mask. They pay Ataru to get the mask, and then they each wear it. It gives them all pink & green striped marks on their faces where the mask was. Ataru gets one too, but in the shape of a hand print across his eyes/forehead because Lum tried to check his temperature earlier. They had Ten go get medicine from Lum's UFO to fix it, but it just reversed the markings so now they have stripes everywhere BUT the point of contact.

i just liked the green/purple they used.
