He was stuck in a ring with one of the most dangerous martial artists on the planet with a ruleset that hampered him from doing almost anything and and then managed to not only not get knocked unconscious but to honestly get the better of Ali. Wasn't exactly good television but it is impressive.

Igari's actually quite endearing to me. He gives it fair play with the Sumo wrestler and he has huge respect for Mount Toba.

Look at the other quarter finalists in the Max tournament - Baki, Retsu, Katsumi, Doppo, Shibukawa, Jack, Zargon. Igari was way weaker than all of them so his veteran savvy and crafty tricks were all he has and he nearly beat Baki as a result.

Igari is probably one of the best characters in the manga. He defeated Kinryuuzan and also fought with Doppo when he was young.

The rules were set against him and there were threats made towards him.

There is a good amount of corroboration supporting that he had some big threats made towards him by the Nation of Islam members that flocked with Ali if he beat him.
There were also big limitations on what Inoki was allowed to do. Like he was not allowed to grapple, throw, or use standing kicks on Ali.

That match was a stupid clusterfuck that both fighters only entered into because it promised a gigantic payday.

Yes and Itagaki wanked the shit out of him. For some reason lots of people think a character losing a fight means Itagaki hates them. In reality they could be the biggest jobber in the series and Itagaki would still want their abilities
