you already got sort of an idea that all the convicts don't consider running away losing and they're basically all just cheaters who refuse to consider anything but death as losing
Spec needed to be beaten to near-death to consider himself getting a lose
Dorian needed to come to the realization that he's a cheater to consider himself getting a lose
Doyle needed to understand what mercy is in the face of a man who could easily kill him to know what defeat is
Yanagi needed to actually be killed (until this got retconned so does he still think he hasn't lost yet?)

However, Sirkosky needed to be literally mindfucked. This helps shed some light on these convicts mentality
