It is pretty sad, but in a way it was the best end they could have gotten given their situation. You know what they say, "Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened". I think in a weird way it's a bitter sweet pseudo happy end. They lived mostly happy lives despite their situation, they made the best of what they had and most importantly they had eachother.
I think the afterword by tkmiz sums it up best.

Think about it though, if you are into those things you have more chances to be a lonely, secretive, shy person. And that also fits well with having your own inner world, that sometimes you could express artistically.
For me everything I ever discovered about tsukumizu has been good and makes me like him more.
