How would you fix female leads and love interests in battle shonen?

write them the exact same way as any of the male characters in the series instead of trying to make them halfway feminine and failing
most japanese have never even touched a woman, let alone tried to understand her thought process, so they will always fail at depicting them properly. there's also the matter of people's thought processes not being the same when their life is on the line, which is often the case for those stuck in battle shonen, and should sure as shit be the case for a main character.
girl problems aren't compelling and in a world with superpowers where everyone's at war nobody cares about your period. you're supposed to be mulan until the fighting's over, then you can worry about living a normal life. offpanel.

First comes the character then you can make them feminine or something. They have to be competent to be liked and desired.

Write them as if they have a brain and think with more than just their vagina. Sakura was completely inexcusable. She never brought up the fact that sasuke almost killed her several times and basically became a complete assclown. Rukia suddenly just loves renji? That makes no sense with the amount of chemistry they had. Nami is just tits personified. Noelle from black clover is written very well, she’s useful, uses her head, and her love for Asta makes fucking sense. Women aren’t just going to slurp down the first guy that looks like a k pop character, it’s like these guys experienced so much rejection they personified women as cold, unfeeling harpes who only want giga chad in their pussy.

Well imagine they were guys. As long as a female lead would be considered trash if they were a guy then they aren't useful.
So 'useful' should mean that they are almost as capable as the male lead.

Love intrests are completely unnecessary in shonen.

Make them plot relevant, or make them competent fighters who win/help win on screen battles. At minimum give them a constant, crucial support role, like a mission control that others actually need, or a healer whose services are in high demand.

In general ask “If the heroine fucked the hero and spent the rest of the series doing nothing more than warming the hero’s bed, cooking his meals, and doing chores for him without any additional dialogue; what problems would that cause the action and the plot?” And if the answer is “none” you could probably be doing a better job with the female lead.

Overall the idea would be to make sure she’s a genuine partner to the hero. Not just some girl with a crush on the hero who never does anything of note, and not some useless bitch that the hero has a crush on.

I would either make them

Give them all the Hajime no Ippo treatment: AKA romance is used strictly as a long running joke and while also using it for toilet humor along with jokes about dicks, sex, homosexuality and overall bullying and abuse. Romance in battle shonen is always horrible, even so when the love-interest takes center stage. Also, have characters actually fuck, but make a point to make it these characters gross and obnoxious as possible about it (see. Aoki's sex life).

Well on the whole I think its fine. Female leads tend to not be the focus but it wouldn't take must more effort at the very least to make them useful in battles.

Love interests on the other hand aren't the focus of most shounen stories. Rurouni Kenshin is really the only shounen series I can think of that did the love interest thing well, but in most shounen romance is not the focus and it really shouldn't be, only shippers care about that bullshit so fuck them. I like the example you posted, naru/saku's fags tear power me to this day after sakura lost. That was just the funniest shit ever.
