The whole conceit of the show is that you don't need meaning or a purpose to do something as long as it makes you happy or the people you care about happy and its genuinely what you want to do. That's why, despite Ichise dying alongside the rest of humanity he died with a smile on his face because he found happiness with Ran.

There's nothing to really get beyond what the show explicitly says is what I mean, I don't see how people could fail to "understand" the show unless they literally weren't paying attention. Even for a show that has barely any exposition for long periods nothing is really intentionally obfuscated to be harder to understand; sure the show utilizes some abstractions during the surface eps but it's not too difficult to see what they were getting at.

Bingo. Most of the people that call it pretentious garbage fell asleep during the first episode. It is a simple show but because of the slow pacing and focus on atmosphere it filters out the people that started it expecting non-stop action or whatever it is they saw in the promotional art.

I wouldn't go as far as to say its a simple show. The presentation itself with characters who talk in long monotone monologues over bleak images make the what woiuld be simple plot come off as much more complex. On top of that the deeper post-structuralist themes of the show aren't going to be obvious to people not versed in that idea
