That was one of the worst parts of the manga for sure (though it didn't prevent it from being great), the story was told so quickly almost all the secondary characters were completely irrelevant even if they appeared in promotional material and covers and such.

anime has a good sound track. It drags in the insei arc a bit but it's more about seeing the progression of his classmates. It's a good series.
