She's actually dying here. Crucifixion kills by suffocation, holding the body in that position causes the victim to slowly choke to death. The nails we see in depictions of Jesus are for dramatic effect, typically simple ropes/chains were used. This girl is slowly and painfully running out of oxygen, weighed down by the pain of blood rushing to her lower extremities, all without food or water, likely for more than 24 hours. If she didn't have a gag, she would likely be screaming for someone to kill her, as crucifixion victims often did (there's a reason that the Roman soldier who supposedly stabbed Jesus with a spear is venerated as a hero).

This is why Crassus' decision to crucify rebellious slaves along the Appian Way in Rome was so brutally effective. It would be horrifying. Feces, urine, vomit, combined with rotting flesh, as well as the screams of the victim. Again, this is why the decision to crucify the captured prisoners of the Third Servile War was so effective, and why even when Rome was facing annihilation/implosion (Caesar vs Pompey, Octavian vs Antony, Crisis of the Third Century) there wasn't a slave rebellion capable of overthrowing the rest of the system.

While your assessment is relatively correct, her lividity and pose suggests that she hasn't been up there for long. She's still hydrated and has the strength to hold her torso up. You could put a ladder under her feet to secure her footing and to take the strain off of her body while you remove her from it.

It's hard to say for sure because obviously we haven't conducted experiments on this. But in my totally layman's opinion, the real killer is simply being unable to breathe. Cutting a would-be victim down would almost certainly save that victim's life, as long as you were very careful about re-hydration (gentle sips of water rather than gulps, which could actually kill the person in question).
