I have to disagree. If a comedy series doesn't take itself seriously at all, it's completely aimless. You either ditch plot entirely (say, something like Cromartie High-School) or you get a bit serious.

The problem is that the tone is really different. It's like the author wanted to do a comedy and a drama but was forced to join them into 1 series. It works sometimes, but sometimes the drama just feels out of place.
