give one main struggle and find ways that people cope with it or avoid the issue altogether.
Example: alcoholic: tries to avoid alcohol but eventually ends up at the bar and drinking his night away, only to get shouted by his boss.
Goes to A.A. throws away all his booze.
Starts getting pangs and drinks mouthwash, anything else that can fill the hole.
Loses his family, his income, well being and eventually the roof over his head.
It's not that hard.
Another example is gendo from EVA. He has a low desire but uses everything within his reach as a stepping stone to meet his wife again. He forms and abandons relationships, he becomes stubborn, doesn't listen to others, gets in fights.
I'm sure there are other ways of writing unlikeable characters.

I find Haru to be the most likeable of the bunch. Only issue I have with her is that she's incredibly fucking dense. Other than that, she's a sweet girl.

I heard the manga develops their relationship a lot more and thus it feels less rushed.
