Just read the first 2 volumes and it was terrible. I just ordered volumes 3-5. Does it ever get good
>inb4 hurr durr waste of money read it online
I like physical media. Reading manga through a computer screen is soulless.

No it doesn't. You wasted your money.
Why not borrow from a library?
A lot of people will say OP gets better at 50 or 100 or fucking 300 chapters whenever the plot and drama really ramp up, but it honestly doesn't. It carries the same vibe from chapter 1 to chapter 981. The islands and scenarios get more wild, the universe becomes larger, the backstories more involved, but it's ultimately just a pulpy adventure series with a comical tone and very, very grand scope.
I'd say read it until Mihawk shows up. I believe that's around the end of a volume, since you're collecting physical media, and it's the first glimpse at where the story is going after East Blue. I was hooked from page 1, and I can't imagine your opinion changing if you've already read as far as its fourth story arc and still aren't feeling it.
waste of money read it online
>I was hooked from page 1
Genuine question user, why? There hasn't been anything that's really grabbed me. It feels very filler-like to me. The shanks dude seems interesting and I'd like to know more of his story, but everything else has been extremely meh so far.
I'm also a fan of TinTin, reasure Island, old Indiana Jones stories and Red Ribbon era Dragon Ball. I'm just a fan of the adventure genre and journey pieces in general, much moreso than the modern shonen battle manga.
One Piece is basically the king of that market, the design of it's world and the length of the comic means that it really comes off as a globe trotting adventure better than any other piece of media out there right now. Each island is a fully developed setting with it's own culture, cast, and conflicts. The crew is developed just enough that I give a shit about their endgame goals but light enough that I never take them too seriously, so they stay engaging to follow. The comic has a good structure for the kind of narrative it is thanks to the island format, with small episodic stories laying the groundwork for a larger saga that pays off in the overarching mystery of the series at its end, so there's always a hook to keep you invested. Oda's artwork, love it or hate it, makes sure than the majority of it's thousands of characters are instantly recognizable.
If you feel like the crap with Buggy conquering some random village is filler then the series probably isn't for you, because that's One Pieces bread and butter. There's big war arcs or tragic backstories here and there but they're a really small percentage of the series' run.
Not that guy, but here's my take.
It's the beautiful way the story opens up from a very simplistic setting where the most exciting thing is a floating restaurant to crazy fantasy worlds you'll see later. Too many sci-fi just try to overwhelm you from the start with the world, the inhabitants, the abilities, raising too many questions and often distracting you. One Piece takes it nice and slow so you can focus on the characters and some simple preliminary ideas and themes. As adventurers, their understanding of the world grows naturally alongside yours. You may find yourself coming back to East Blue because you want to relive the more elementary story structure, the easy filler life, a take you don't get as one of the biggest worlds in manga opens up and the complexity piles on.
One Piece impresses people who are uneducated and read few other books.
>i hated it but i ordered more volumes
Do people actually read One Piece because they think it's deep?
It's being childish and light-hearted that makes it a fun weekly read. I wouldn't keep up with any story for almost 20 fucking years if it wanted to be taken that seriously.
>It's shit but I like shit
>lighthearted and fun stuff can't be good
It's not shit, it's comfort food.
I know we're on Zig Forums where shits black and white but there's a massive difference between the two. One Piece isn't a groundbreaking story but it has no intention to be, it's written to be enjoyed for all ages and knows exactly the kind of story it is. It does what it sets out to accomplish well.
It's baratie and arlong park that the story begins to pick up. If you don't like it after those two arcs then you should consider dropping it. It's first three arcs are slow and act more as character introductions. But One pieces strength comes from the crew interactions and world events you get later.
I wanna argue about some dumb asss shit but it's gotta be One Piece related
Yes.
>It's bad but I like bad
This is your average wan piss tard.
No. Now sell those Volumes and buy Tekkon kinkreet instead.
>buys physical cipies before even knowing what he is getting into
>doesnt like it
>buys more
> am i wasting my money?
Did you know many libraries have copies that you can borrow before you buy?
Might as well try reading online to see if you like it
Volume 9 is the exact volume where it gets great.
With One Piece, if you don't like it by the end of Arlong Park, you won't like it at all. Sure, the story and world building unveils as the chapters go beyond Arlong Park, but the spirit doesn't change.
Arlong Park ends at volume 10-11 i think.
>I just read something I didn't like, so I purchased more of it
You beautiful, beautiful, goy.
What is so terrible about this? I would understand if you call it "meh" or something but "terrible"?
Zoro’s comedic backstory breezes past in a few panels, and Luffy’s goal is little more than “I wanna be the best” cliche. Also, all of the bad guys are just one-note cartoons. It feels incredibly childish.
Just read volumes 68-70. Absolutely horrendous. Just ordered volumes 71-74.
One Piece is a fun pirate Odyssey. I was in on chapter 1.
>he post it again
Not an argument.
>Ordering something you can try online for free
I'm not saying don't have physical media because I prefer to read physical copies. I'm just saying be smart about it OP
>but the spirit doesn't change.
That's honestly what I love most about One Piece. Most other long form manga lose their way
Liking physical media is one thing, buying something like One Piece, which has like 100 volumes is a whole other can of worms.
Mate even Oda has gone on record saying he doesn't mind if you don't buy the volumes and that you should do it for arcs that you loved.
One Piece tells big fat lies!!!
