It's a good thing you brought up 5toubun, because it helped me realize why Cuckoo sucks. 5toubun's plot had goals: tutor the quints and help them graduate. Find out which quint marries Fuuts. Cuckoo, on the other hand, is completely directionless. MCs have been engaged, but they neither go along with nor oppose it, and it's obvious Hiro, Sachi and the Miyamura clone will lose, so whatever paneltime they get is meaningless (unlike in 5toubun where the winner wasn't obvious from the start, so every quint's presence had a convincing illusion of importance at the very least). That's why everything in Cuckoo feels like a waste of time. There are no stakes, there is no conflict to get invested in, only soulless fanservice.
