Beastars

I recently realized that if your writing can go all over the place, it’s pretty hard to speculate either. You are kinda stuck on a ride.

More Louis this week, Melon did nothing wrong.

Beastars is so fucking dead, that I can reply first, chilling af.

There’s so many plotlines that haven’t gone anywhere. Mixed with the rushed tone and announcement that the author plans ending it soon doesn’t do good for the hype. Hope the anime fixes lot of the nonsense the manga has introduces. The main character stuff is great but then there’s mediocre fightan all the time.

I don’t completely buy that it’s some external demand to include it in the manga either, but then again, same shit happens in movies and videogames.

>Hope the anime fixes lot of the nonsense
They'd have to rewrite the whole shit; and you know how that usually ends, user:
Author doesn't like comparisons and to highlight its fucking failures;
Anime writers know shit about an OG story, so they just make fluff and graphics begin to sucks hard, due to wasted time.

Well, JoJo 5 got a shitload better by just adding bunch of assassin scenes around.

>Melon did nothing wrong.
he didnt fuck his mum

Can almost guarantee you that it would’ve led to cannibalism.

When do you think Beastars started going downhill?

When I stopped reading it
>Legosi “blew away all that money” and Yafya didn’t beat the shit out of him

It has been ups and downs since the beginning. It’s consistently great character moments and comfy if didn’t worldbuilding mixed with moments of mediocre action. Louis, Legosi and Melon are all great. Shishigumi Haru-rescue, duel with Ritz, Kyuu and now the BAM boss-rush are variably mediocre.

Maybe it has higher highs and lower lows now.

didn’t = dodgy

Melon shot Legosi because Legosi had a moment of absolute stupidity rather than just autism and Yafya just sort of lets him meander around from there instead of setting up some sort of "grudging mentor" arc like it originally seemed to be setting up.

>Louis, Legosi and Melon are all great.
Melon sucks though. His characterization is great (his backstory, his habits, his motivations, etc.), but goddamn, his actual writing is dogshit so bad even Jack wouldn't smell it (how he takes over the Shishigumi, how he so easily otherwise overtakes Legosi, how the Back Alley Market loves him even though he's an open bloody psychopath, etc.).

I think a bit after the party where Melon escapes and shoots Legosi.

Melon himself is fine I think- the series never shied away from the fact that in Beastars' world there are some fundamental incompatibilities between herbivores and carnivores that are always present even if they CAN be overcome. Melon being a prime example of what happens when it doesn't work is a good story hook and ties directly into Legosi's mixed heritage. I think after the party things escalated too fast and got TOO Baki-tier silly. There's all sorts of goofy shit in the series but this whole fight in the black market is just out-of-whack with everything that came before it. The fight between Riz and Legosi had goofy elements (mothman, Legosi laying down to talk to Riz) but still felt like it fit within Beastars' established level of goofery- where this gang shit is just comical. The shishigumi didn't seem weird at all- it's a pride of lions, the pressure they feel being "the king of beasts" is a cool concept, and really their actual operations looked/felt like normal Yakuza.

Now it's mask wearing lizards who make watch-sized bombs they attach to their tails to snap off and throw and high-heel wearing female gangs and quiz games and shit. It's kinda dumb.

>how he takes over the Shishigumi
Lions like gambling. Him seeking and accepting the job makes sense since his more higher class operation had just been blown by Yafya. Should’ve flashbacked their initial meeting, though, sure.
>how he so easily otherwise overtakes Legosi
He’s fast and clever. Legosi is strong but naive. The first meeting was a bit Paru’d even though the concept makes sense. The tattoo thing was barely an encounter. Tower fight had Melon losing but managed to sneak out of it by abusing society’s prejudices against carnivores.
>how the Back Alley Market loves him even though he's an open bloody psychopath
Not that open. He’s also attractive, charismatic and stands for unapologetic bloodlust and freedom, something the carnies yearn for, especially at BAM.

I still like it but yeah, didn't have the drive to read the newest chapters for months now.
Before that I was always hype when the leaks came and instantly read it as soon as it was out. Maybe it's already better again no idea. Not sure where it started I like Melon and Yafya a lot or just their arc in general, but then it always drifted away to other randos like Shitler or even worse that bunny girl and the stand or revival of that lion guy didn't help making more any more hopeful.

I think Dom might be gay

>Lions like gambling
Lions HAD to gamble. Their organization was all but dead after losing two leaders in close window and being down to a handful of members.

See But single bad parts are forgiven if the rest is good again, see the stupid moth power in arc 1, we all love that arc regardless.
The bad is when too much shit happens in a too short time. Legosi being dumb and letting Melon go and getting shot for it to be some sort of fakeout wasn't great but okay because it led to the dream about his mother.

But then came that shit eater guy with an absolute irrelevant miniarc that didn't add anything. And after that came the dumb fight with Legosi falling down a high as fuck house without anything happening, then came Kyuu as another new character without actual importance and the stupid stand and training, then weird stuff like the quiz and seriously, I like the shishigumi, but now I am tired of them and think they should move on from always centering everything around them. There is more to that world.

She fucked him

This is the main issue for me.

Beastars has always had BS moments like Legosi losing bite strength from working out, thinking he killed Haru that night, letting Melon go, etc. But it was balanced out more by comfy chapters in the past. These days it seems like every chapter has some wacky new twist or Legosi doing some impossibly retarded shit (I need to wear a dress to fight a female!)

Beastars is at its worst when it focuses on action in lieu of character drama. Prove me wrong.

The ultimate flaw is not centering the plot in a small number of developed locations, which was what facilitated the manga's main strength of close proximity character interaction. Dispensing with the entire supporting cast after New Year's was a red flag, but for a brief time they had replacements at the condo and udon shop which seemed to be the status quo moving forward; if you're desperate to solidly place blame then it's probably around the night mask party when it descends into random stuff in random places (despite that also being the approximate point of the absolute best chapter, Cock & Straw torture)

>The ultimate flaw is not centering the plot in a small number of developed locations
Interesting point that resonates. Maybe the manga could improve just by adding moments where the city's topology and different districts, the situation in them and such are explained as the story progresses?

I wouldn't mind putting some new monsters in her.

When we went from here

To here in about 20 chapters

It didn't really. It's always had plenty of silly moments, they're just in higher concentration now. I suppose it's the difference between bumps in the road and driving on gravel.

Shit, you right. The teeth pull was one of the first times I was like "OK, what is this shit anymore?"

I only started getting confused when Shitler happened

When do we get spoilers?

I completely forgot about him. That's how inconsequential he was.

Shitler was fine, but the bats were poorly handled. Paru clearly retconned whatever she was going to do first with them.

>retconned
Paru's baiting for sales, every fucking week trying some fetish and other idiotic scenario, because her editors have exausted the first original ideas they had since nearly 100 chapters ago.
They don't know what the fuck to do anymore.
