dragon ball is a series made by a guy who thinks poop jokes are really funny & has no pretension about being anything but a series of justifcations for wacky gag/reaction shots and big power levels slamming into eachother. they don't even bother to explain how ki works becaus it doesn't matter. getting mad at dragon ball for being stupid is like getting mad at barney for it.
hunter x hunter actually makes attempts at being something more than punchman comics, so when it completely cheapens it's own drama it's a flaw

Their delusion knows no bounds, they unironically defend their shonen as if it was in the level of actual literature or something made for the ages, when it couldn't be further from the truth.
The worst part of it is the intellectual dishonesty of the average hiatusfag.
One might tell him that the "loose, deconstructed structure" of the series is nothing when compared to an average Tezuka manga, which was looser and more unorthodox in its events, it all runs off him.
One could tell him that Togashi's famous stream of consciousness walls of text lack Urasawa's conciseness and good writing, he'll pretend to not hear you.
One could tell him that Oda's worldbuilding absolutely destroys Togashi lazy crap of arranging earth continents in a different way and calling it a day, he'll pretend that you're not there.
One might tell him that Peter Greenaway and Junji Ito make way better integration of classic works of art to the dramatic structure, making those parallels a powerful punctuation for the narrative, he'll pretend Togashi is at the same level.
One could tell him there's more nuance in Tezuka's Crime and Punishment, the hiatusfag will feign ignorance on these subjects.
There is no specimen more disgusting and more intellectually dishonest than your average hiatusfag, if you see one in the wild, it is your obligation, I repeat, your obligation, to mock his ignorance of the medium and tell him to go kill himself.

So first off, my initial impression of Hunter x Hunter was that a lot of people: it seemed fine but average, typical to this kind of shonen anime. The characters were fun but seemed like nothing or especially interesting. Gon was an anime boy who tries hard, Killua was a nice Vegeta, Leorio was Lupin the III for some reason and Kurapika is a non-threatening boy for people who like non-threatening boys. On top of that the plot setup felt.. standard and i felt pretty sure i know where the story was going and that's where i, like a lot of people, were dead fucking wrong.
The main thing to keep in mind here is that Hunter x Hunter is not a shonen anime. Well, not strictly at least. More accurately it's a deconstructionist shonen anime. What do i mean by this? When a medium or genre is around for long enough it goes through a period of deconstruction, where artists take the established elements or building blocks of a genre or medium and then actively work backwards, essentially restructuring how that genre or medium works. Typically to make a commentary on said medium or for the purpose of pushing the boundaries what said medium can achieve. Once an art has been around for long enough it builds a particular rules set and after a certain period of stagnation people will actively try and tear said rule apart as opposed to build on it further and thus deconstruction occurs. To bring things back into context take a look at two of the most famous examples of deconstructivist anime: Neon Genesis Evangelion and Mahou Shoujo Magica. Both those shows exist directly as statements from what came before them. Evangelion exists because Gundam was a thing, Madoka exists because shows like Sailor Moon and Cardcaptor Sakura happened. But rather than expanding on the source material ever so slightly like other shows of the same genre Evangelion and Madoka are direct responses, even criticisms to their forebearers. Shows like these push the medium forward.
