Nagato and his old akatsuki that wasn't terrorist group was ambushed by Hanzo and Danzo(not sure on that) with his anbu shinobi. I'm pretty sure Danzo made Hanzo actually attack the old akatsuki.

So Hanzo/Amegakure leader took Konan as hostage and wanted Yahiko to kill Nagato due to Rinnegang but Yahiko died and Nagato gone mad and summoned the statue which put the black rods inside him and started some jutsu which sucked souls. Hanzo gtfo there and that's how terrorist Akatsuki was born

Half it of it is filler, the anime starts slow but it get better after the bridge arc, whatever you do do not drop it before episode 81, that's the best episode in the entire series and it tanscends the manga.
