I'm 15 episodes into my rewatch of this show, and I'm remembering why I loved it so much while it was airing. Why don't they make fun shows with colorful characters anymore?

There's a point, even if we looked at the most basic: to entertain. But the story does a good job exploring youth, the excitement of life during that period and the fact that we should look towards hope rather than give in to the despair of aging/losing our innocence.

Star Driver was too silly for me. Captain Earth was too bland. Buddy Complex had an interesting concept but got bogged down by a shitty romance plot. Valvrave was fucking absurd but kind of fun. Gundam NT was nonsensical, Hathaway's Flash is delayed, and Sunrise seems determined not to create any new AU shows besides goddamned Build Fighters. Is mecha dead? Am I actually going to have to go back and watch Fafner, even though I hate Hiraiface?

Fafner's Hiraiface honestly looks pretty good in the later installments. I mean, it's still sameface, obviously, but it looks a lot better than the 00s renditions of Hiraiface usually did.

I know I'm just picky as fuck, but I really hate idols. I couldn't even get that far into Macross Frontier. Interrupting the plot to sing a song (or plots revolving around songs) just fills me with stupid rage. I can acknowledge that they're probably at least good, though.

Also this. It sucks that when you say "Hirai & mecha" most people just think of Seed/Destiny. Which is such a shame because stuff like Fafner and Majestic Prince were pretty damn enjoyable.

I think Seed, but also sCRYed which I wasn't a fan of either. Weirdly, I like the look of Infinite Ryvius, though. Maybe it's the comparatively more uniform color palette.

I loved this show so much. It's one of my favorites but been a while since I rewatched it. The character and mecha design was top notch.
I really loved the story. Some things were a little out there or didn't get fully explained, but I honestly didn't mind at all. What I really liked about this show was the characters and their interactions with each other. The show wasn't just about growing up, but how these different friend groups change for better or worse. The show has a lot of "trios" but each of them has their own dynamic. Even Head was part of a trio, though that one ended disastrously. When it was airing, there was nothing I looked forward to more than my 21 minutes of high school drama and then 3 minutes of mecha battles.
I didn't care for Captain Earth that much, bland definitely describes it. It has some cool elements, like Puck, but overall I found it so boring and lacking the magic that Star Driver had. I think the dream episode was really cool though; it's a shame the series wasn't more like that.

Oh, that's true. I forgot gg kept the commercials in their releases. Keito is very good. I liked Scarlet Kiss and Kanako's the most. The last time I was in Japan I got to find a bunch of the DVD box sets for very cheap at a second-hand store in Osaka.

Same here. I've been sitting here over the past few days re-absorbing the show, and at no point have I gotten bored. I'm actually enjoying Wako a lot more than I did while it was airing. Ditto for Needle and Window Star, the dynamically Lesbian Duo.

Same. I miss staying up till like 4am to watch the live broadcast, then wake up a few hours later for the gg subs to get released. I miss all the threads and the speculah.
