Do watch Ponyo, no matter what anyone says. The voice acting is glorious.

Laputa is essential.

I recently marathoned all of their films, one a day over 3 weeks or so. Porco Rosso is my favorite, that was the case before the marathoning though. Definitely don't miss it.

what do you guys think of Ocean Waves

Holy shit I watched it with a bunch of friends when I marathoned all the Ghibli movies. It's so fucking ridiculous, impossible to tell where it was going at any given time. 10/10 soap opera.

Just watch all of them. Even the lesser ones are worth seeing once.

Whisper of the Heart is my favourite, you could skip Ocean Waves but its still enjoyable

This post does not apply to Tales from Earthsea

For pretty much every other one I'd say they have merit in being evaluated on a case by case basis.

As an avid Earthsea fan I sat down to have fun shitting on it but god damn it made me so furious.

Watch Ponyo only and ignore the others

Pointless. It's like a really inane and uninteresting version of Only Yesterday.

Loved it. Good romance and comfy 90s vibe. I hate how the internet has destroyed that world.

Go back

Earthsea is the only one you should skip.

I bet you like spirited away faggot

>Go back

He can't though.

I don't know where he came from but he has to go back there

Hopefully you’re not talking about English

The internet destroyed it, remember?

WOAH

I think the only one I might actually suggest watching in English is Pom Poko since the framing is this really dry fake serious documentary narration that doesn't really come across if you don't know the different tones and what not of the language.

Which are the essentials?
Start with these:
>Spirited Away
>Princess Mononoke
>Howl's Moving Castle
>Castle in the Sky
>Kiki's Delivery Service

They're all quite similar in how they feel. My Neighbour Totoro is a kids film but still essential (I know the others are too but this one is for younger kids). Grave of the Fireflies should also be prioritized but it's a war film so be prepared for something heavier and sadder when you put this one on.

Don't forget to also watch Castle of Cagliostro and Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. They're essential despite technically not being made under the ghibli name.

After you've watched all of these you can move onto the rest and I don't suggest you that you skip any of them. But these are the ones you should start with, and the most essential.

Essential: Porco roso
Skip: Only yesterday

Spirited Away is overrated, Whisper of the Heart is boring.

Taste this shit should be illegal

>Which are the ones that I can skip?

No

I honestly don't understand the love for ghibli movies. The animation is beatiful; but all of them seem to be really similar to each other and generic, and aimed at kids or just boring. I've seen pretty much all of them at this point, simply to appreciate the animation, but i further than that i really don't like any of them.

I had no idea that Miyazaki would be involved with something like Lupin.

Is proco rosso actually amazing or is it just championed by tryhards? It's one of the only I haven't watched because it seems boring.

He worked on the original show as co-director in a few of the episodes I believe

skip mononoke. it's boring.

not strictly ghibli, but key members worked on it, watch future boy conan. honestly one of the best things takahata and miyazaki have ever made.

It's a lovely film. Other Ghibli movies tend to feel somewhat too similar, at least Porco Rosso stands as its own thing.

It's extremely derivative, but fun. The Wind Rises was better.
