The US is very found of romeo and juliet, the odessey, and cinderella.
Certain european countries will have tales like thousand and one nights or brothers grimm tales pop up randomly.
It's actually a fascinating topic.
Countries have their own stories become famous in their own lands all the time, but every once in a while they would take a story from somewhere else more to heart than the original location. That resonance is quite curious, and can be tied back to the early days of international anime broadcasting.

Today, most non english dubbing, if even still alive, with maybe the exception of italian, goes by what's popular in the english (global) market.
Back in the early 90s and before, this wasn't an option. Different TV stations from all over the world would choose titles that would resonate with their country. As a result, there are anime so forgotten in japan that no single person would be able to tell you about them, where and entire generation in another country would be able to go on forever about them as if they were made in their own country.
For example, there are countries where everybody over the age of 20 has seen mrs pepperpot as a kid, an anime that I have literally seen nobody ever talk about online

It's not about sample size, it's about resonance. It goes beyond worldwide recognition and output.
You won't hear about cinderella or romeo and juliet, or the odessey, or hell even sherlock holms in japan as much as you hear in the states, meanwhile as we get something about alice or king arthur every once in a while, the japanese put every other character in alice in the wonderland costumes and gives every legendary sword a CALIBUR ending.
