And it completely saved him the first time, Luffy could've taken him out with the first G4 use if not for Doffy's awakening. That's why King Kong Gun had to be a decisive blow to completely subdue Doffy.
He's also a foil to Luffy since Doffy was an entitled overnurtured piece of shit from birth (or at least once his "family" got to him and hyped him up) while Luffy has screamed and kicked his way to relevancy his whole life. Doffy NOT losing would've been shittier writing.
