On the one hand Anime can be used to appeal only to one's lower carnal self.
On the other hand, I believe that it can appeal to one's higher self, in the same way a book which changes one's perspective on the world functions.
It goes without saying that Anime is a form of art.
If we compare this to writing, there exist thousands of incredible books, which appeal to one's higher self.
Nietzsche, Darwin, Orwell, Plato, Kafka, to name a few authors.
On the other hand, there exist millions of unique erotic fanfictions of every character imaginable doing things so depraved it is unbelievable the human mind could conceive of them.
I'm not saying any particular director is the Nietzsche of Anime.
My belief is simply that just like how literature can both expand and degenerate one's mind, so can Anime.
