What I really don't understand is why were Gendo and the old men (SEELE?) acting so weirdly towards each other? Why did SEELE want to dispose of Gendo or fire him or something? Why did Gendo act all "haha 2 smart 4 them"? Why the fuck did they send an army to Nerv?
I'm pretty sure they all had the same objective. To evolve manking and achieve true peace, which they did.

I disagree. At least in the first half of the show he has multiple episodes which basically go like this
>a thing happens
>a thing confuses or annoys Shinji
>through one reason or another Shinji realises the thing's real meaning or implication

There are a bunch of examples where Toji/Kensuke point those things flat out: Misato being a slob (Shinji hates it without realising that only he gets to see that side of her), Shinji completely missing Misato's promotion and the significance of that, etc. You can argue that he chose to ignore Asuka literally shoving her tits in his face (though I doubt he was fully aware of what was going on), but there were a bunch of other examples of him just flat out not getting it.
