Because it's just kids being kids. For example, big mouth is fucking atrocious with its blatant sexual overtones combined with its unrealistic characters and the western surrealist humor. Yuru Yuri on the other hand shows situations that are less gross and politically charged with more cute and believable scenes. Furthermore yuru is not written with some type of "OMG EPIC OVER THE TOP PERIOD BLOOD JOKE" style and instead shows that the characters care for each other as friends even though they do tease each other. This is exemplified when Kyouko cries after Akari goes missing.
The yurus provide a calm and wholesome atmosphere of kids just being kids while still encapsulating few adult overtones; compared to their western counterparts who base the show on a sex joke and add story around it. This is one of the reasons I enjoy Japanese sol, because it isn't about hurting another person, it isn't about politics or an agenda. Its simply about friends and caring about one another and yuru yuri, with all of its faults is about the innocence of childhood which is something I was never able to experience.

I actually is funny, which is really rare because the japanese can't write comedy. The only other shows I remember laughing at were sabagebu and nichibros, because everything else just uses the retarded "moron does/says silly thing, retard repeats said thing with a suprired/annoyed voice" format, which doesn't even qualify as attempting comedy.

Very nice, user. I agree. The intentions behind this anime aren't as nefarious or depraved as western media's intentions seem to be, nor are they as crude. The girls in this show all seem innocent. and never loose their femininity.
