Care to give me a quick rundown on his world view? I can't make it past the first episode without rolling my eyes and stopping.

It's just him being triggered and cynical about how "fake" people are all the time. He hates nice girls because of how they're just "lying". He earnestly wants friends, but can't make them. He's also got some sort of savior/martyr complex because he tries to put no value on his own social standing, so it's okay to make himself look like a weirdo loner if it makes someone else happier.

This guy had a dark past? I thought he was just shot down when he confessed to a girl and that's the extent of his social failure?

I liked this show from season 1 and season 2.. If not for this I would probably stop anime... I like the romance and how the anime keeps you hanging... the subtlety made me fall in love with the story

ironically he is fake too, lies to himself about not wanting or needing anyone and acts tough as if he can't be hurt or worried while being very hurt and worried inside.

I think it's more of like the being liked or hated isn't really his end goal. He just really completes his objectives in his own way regardless of how many people end up hating him in the process. People liking or hating him is just a result of what he does.
