They had everything set up to be a decent show, but rather than even being simply disappointing, they created such a shit show. Egaos were too powerful.

Sharper but down-to-earth designs, stakes about people dying in different games or getting their legs cut by automatic saws or falling down a building, satanic-like monsters and other creepy abominations...
Basically take Yami Marik and Bakura and the writing of the first chapers of the manga and ramp it up a notch, Kazuki Takahashi was pretty good at horror but that seems all but forgotten
