Its kinda interesting how the series was grittier and more grounded (well as grounded as a series about magic using ninjas can be) early on.

I don't think the whole "dead ninjas get taken and cut to pieces to avoid enemy clans learning their secrets" thing ever came up again after the original explanation.

The most plausible reason is that Kishimoto gave up on hand signs because they would waste panels on unimportant motions and chapters have limited space.

Like that one merlin life action miniseries, once you get good you no longer need them.
