This has the most fucked up angels of all time. It starts out all lighthearted but turns into grimdark about teenage suicide. It has a message that is delivered in a way you wouldn't soon forget. You think sweet little angels and butterflies and shit will be the show. Oh, just another children's story. Well, guess the fuck what; the train is coming down the track for you. If you aren't a complete headcase, you'll move the fuck out of the way. Take your Day of Flight up my ass to a new world of shit. Sit there and pity yourself, you useless dingleberry. Life's hard, and it's harder if you're stupid. Think those wings just appear out of nowhere without a price? Yeah, they didn't tell you about the fun part. Believe me, it's a cocksucking horror show. This bitch is no fairy tail. If you survive to the end, thank your lucky fucking stars. And don't goddamnit just give up before you've really tried. See things to the end. Your bitter end.
The show doesn't start light-hearted, it starts very unsettling. It then gets a little more light-hearted, although still a little uncanny, with a constant mystery about what the haibane are and why they are in this situation. The end isn't grimdark and is about departure in general, not about just suicide (nor about teenage suicide). It's not actually very different in tone from the beginning of the show.
Also, the haibane are probably not angels.

I can't like a show that's character-focused when the characters are so generic that you can tell exactly what their personalities are gonna be from their hair color.
Pretty sure the black wing stuff was related to the "cycle of sin" or whatever, where you needed someone else to help you forgive yourself or something like that. It's been awhile since I watched it last.
I draw pretty much exclusively short haired girls too, I don't know why, maybe because it's easy to do.
