I genuinely awwed at when the canonical lesbian pairing / admission of feelings came up in season 2. For how much flack the show n series gets, it does have quite a few good elements.

I'll admit I haven't watched Kakegurui, but since I haven't made time for Kaiji either, I feel like I can give them a fair shake.

As far as I can tell, they're all game manga; focused on the tension, stakes and personalities of characters tied into outlandish bets and games.

Which puts Kakegurui into a bit of a bind, since I agree with you: It seems like a raunchy pastiche of game manga: The games and stakes only existent to drive a cast of girls to climax, metaphorical and otherwise.

Which frankly makes comparing it to other game manga a non sequitur no different than comparing it to the original YGO manga: The focus (The tension of a game, mystic horror, literally orgasmic one-upmanship) is far too different to suggest there's any meaningful comparison.

Makes sense to me. Usogui is like 50% battle manga. Maybe the first decent gamble arc without battle is the bronze bull, and that’s over 70 chapters in.
The early apartment “gamble” is more like death game manga, and the hangman arc is shitty as far as gambling goes.
